Post 2012 Activities

A global renaissance doesn't happen in one day.  The art and music created for this project will continue to spread. Some of these projects will go viral, some will influence change-makers, and all will continue to affect communities around the planet.  Our hope is that artists, musicians and creative people will continue to make art focused on making the world a better place throughout 2013 and beyond.

By increasing the number of images and music depicting a better world, we hope to spur a global renaissance of enlightenment and ongoing creative expression.  This will open people’s hearts and minds to consider new possibilities for what our world can become and inspire people everywhere to initiate positive action towards a better home for all.

As for A Big Project – our next steps are still being determined.  Many have made wonderful suggestions for how A Big Project could continue to build momentum in 2013 and beyond.  Some of these ideas will be dependent on funding and infrastructure. We will keep you updated as we continue to pursue opportunities.  (Yes, if you’d like to make a donation for A Big Project, we are gladly accepting! Click here to donate.)

Regardless of our trajectory, the website and Facebook pages will remain active.   The artwork will be archived on the website Arts for Peace and will be made accessible to all who are interested.  The data from the surveys will be made accessible to all who are interested. We will encourage ongoing reviews of the data to determine new trends and find new insights into our world.

In addition, many people have begun initiating spin-off projects to build on the incredible work which has already been done in 2012. If you are interested in leading or supporting your own global project, let us know and we will seek to provide consultation support for your efforts based on our own experiences.

Why Now?

Many people have become apathetic about global problems. It’s not we don’t care.  It’s just that we either feel the issues are too big and too complex, or we don’t feel connected to the people who are most affected.

The rapid growth of technology is providing us with opportunities to connect with people around the world in ways that were never possible before.  Widespread uprisings in nations across every region  have highlighted a deep and growing global desire to find better alternatives.

A Big Project is taking advantage of this new technology and this powerful moment in time to increase connections between people across continents by creating a space for us to collectively explore new ways of thinking about global problems, and take action at the local level.

How We Got Started

There's a lot of information in the world.  A lot of times it is hard to sort out what is most important.  There are a number of sectors now using a method to simplify the information overflow so that they can figure out how to move forward in the best way.  This method can be thought of as the 'simple question format'.

The 'SWOT' format (Successes, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) has been adopted by political campaigns and corporations around the world to support strategy development.  Some military groups do a 'Hot Wash' immediately after every incident, bringing soldiers together to identify the strengths, weaknesses, and changes they would make to each mission so they can do better the next time.  Similar methods have been adopted by Hospitals, the Emergency Preparedness Community and other agencies. A top education group in the U.S. (New Teacher Center) uses four questions to help teachers become more effective with their kids.

People all over are using the simple question format because they realized: if you simplify the questions, you can simplify the answers.  It provides a strategy that allows us to determine a collective path forward in the face of the deepest layers of ambiguity. A Big Project was originally conceived with meditation on the question, “If we could take this simple question format to the highest possible level, could we simplify our solutions to global problems?”  It was decided that whether or not it was feasible, it is certainly worth a try!

We decided to craft a simple question format that could apply to global issues, and find a way to ask people from every country so that all voices could be included.  But to ensure the world would listen to the answers , we needed to find a way to move people's hearts as well as their minds.  Thus was born an ambitious agenda to ask the world four project questions, and share the answers through a creative explosion of art and music.

The level of support that emerged was beyond the organizers' dreams.  People from 97 countries participated and came together around one resounding call to action: 'help life change'.  Now, our supporters have asked us to take the next step and create a platform that will enable our new global community to take action, support each other and learn from one another as we seek to help life change.

Who is behind A Big Project?

A:

A Big Project is comprised of individuals from more than 20 countries and nearly every region of the world.  We have no official affiliation with any single organization or institution.  We are a non-political one-year project seeking to build on the wind of change for the greater good.  We are activists, economists, students, receptionists, artists, farmers, scientists, sex workers, lawyers, drivers, teachers, small business owners, spiritual advisers, and people who are unemployed. Regardless of our wide range of political, religious and philosophical perspectives, we are coming together around a common belief that our world can be better than it currently is, and that we have the power to support positive change simply by starting the conversation.

published What is A Big Project's ultimate agenda? in Kindling FAQ 2012-04-06 21:01:16 -0400

What is A Big Project's ultimate agenda?

A:

When it comes to major global issues such as famine, war, or climate change, too many people in the world have become apathetic. They either don’t believe they can affect change or they don’t feel connected to the conversations about change that are taking place.   We seek to address this by creating a space for people from every country to take part in a global conversation.  Our ultimate agenda is to clarify what the world’s agenda is.  Once we discover the answers, by using the universal languages of art and music, we will put a spotlight on these priorities in ways that inspire a new collective sense of possibility, hope and direction for global progress.

Who writes the message that will be sent out globally?

A:

A Big Project will write each of the messages to go out and send them to you for distribution. If you would like to add your own note to the message to make it more personal or show how it is aligned with your organization’s mission, you are welcome to do so!  If you would like to re-write the message altogether, we simply ask that you check with us on the content of the message before sending out.

How many people should you send the message to?

A:

You decide. You can send to just one of your networks, or all of them.  We need large numbers to get around the world so we do hope you will send the message to as many people as possible.

What types of Kindling networks should you send to?

A:

You can send the message out to your personal networks (friends and family) or to your organizational Kindling (people in your organization’s database/listserv). If your organization signs up to participate in the Kindling campaign, we can also list the organization on our website as a partner in supporting this work.

published What will the messages say? in Kindling FAQ 2012-04-06 20:56:44 -0400

What will the messages say?

A:

The first message in June will invite people all over the world to be   a “Spark”   Sparks are the people from every country who will facilitate the four questions that will help us put our finger on the pulse of what people’s priorities are for a better world.  The second message in December will share the findings of the Project and highlight the world’s “Sweet Spot” – the place where people from every region, religion, culture, and level of access to resources agree the world could be better.   This second message will include a live link to an explosion of art and music all over the world. You’ll be seeing and hearing a translation of s our findings into emotions that stir people’s hearts and minds.

What do you need to do?

A:

Your job is quick and simple.  All we ask is that you send out two messages to people in your networks. You'll send one message out in June and the other in December of 2012.  You can use any communication network(s) that you prefer to send out the message. For example you can use email, text, Facebook, Twitter, distribute flyers or make an announcement at a meeting.

Why does A Big Project need your Kindling?

A:

We all know groups of people, “ networks,”  who help us feel part of a community.  Our project is  linking as many of these communities as possible around the world.  We need YOUR Kindling so that when we  articulate the place where the world’s visions for a better world overlap, that common global vision includes the insights, ideas and hopes of people from your community.
